Sara Rance

Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist

Parent Infant Psychotherapist

Sara has gained substantial experience and expertise in psychotherapeutic work with children and families with a wide range of emotional, relational and behavioural difficulties since qualifying in 1994 at the Tavistock Clinic. She worked for 24 years in the NHS, and before moving to work in the Voluntary Sector and independent practice she was employed as Head of Child Psychotherapy within a London NHS Trust. She has always loved working with Under 5s and their parents, becoming a specialist in this area of work, and is a highly-experienced Parent Infant Psychotherapist.

She enjoys working with families from diverse ethnic, religious and social backgrounds. Problems leading people to seek Sara’s help include conflicting and unanticipated feelings arising in the transition to motherhood and fatherhood, difficulties in bonding and attachment, worries about a baby’s crying, sleeping patterns, weaning and feeding difficulties. Others might be struggling as a single parent, with the impact of parenting stresses on the couple relationship or parenting in a same sex relationship. Sara usually sees either or both parents together with their baby or young child, though appointments without the baby are sometimes helpful and expectant parents may be seen antenatally.

Sara’s work is grounded in psychoanalysis, attachment theory and child development. Her starting point is learning about the difficulties troubling family members in the ‘here and now’, including helping parents to understand and respond to their infant’s communications. She aims to build a trusting therapeutic relationship in which reflection deepens understanding of oneself and others, leading to closer and more fulfilling relationships.

Sara is a full member of the Association of Child Psychotherapists, which is registered with the Professional Standards Authority and requires Enhanced DBS clearance. She is a Trustee for the Association for Infant Mental Health UK and was winner of the Infant Mental Health practitioner category in the 2016 Parent Infant Partnership UK awards.
